CNC Machine Builds / Re: My New 3D Printer

You can get a pound of plastic for like $18 and that would last for many many prints I think (I haven't really printed that much yet) but I'm still working off the samples they gave me :)

I looked at putting an extrude on the CNC machine but you still need a way to control the hot end that melts the plastic and extruder that feeds it, and there are some solutions out there but I first wanted to go with something tried and true before reinventing the wheel :) for ABS plstic (the better to print with) you also need a hot plate to print ON - so to make a hot plate big enough for the CNC machine would be crazy :)

CNC Tips / CNC for Dummies
« on: July 05, 2010, 07:54:57 AM »
Hey guys! I'm working on a new article trying to explain the various stuff to do with a CNC machine - basically a CNC for dummies... anyway I'd like to get y'alls opinion on it and any ideas that you might have that would it better :)

http://www.backyardworkshop.com/blog-posts/metalworking/89-static-pages/135-cnc-for-dummies.html

I still need to add more pictures and I'm going to make a few animations and probably a few videos as well, but wanted to get ideas on the general concept first :)

check it out when you get a chance and thanks!

When I was buying my Parallax micro controller I saw that they have a DIY solar panel kit http://www.parallax.com/

Also the Harbor Freight 45 watt solar kit is on sale this weekend for $159! http://www.harborfreight.com/45-watt-solar-panel-kit-90599.html?utm_source=multi&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2610B

I think I'm going to get one :)

I've done aluminum on my homemade machine - without coolant even! just have to take it nice and easy...

I posted up a few pictures and a video here - http://www.backyard-workshop.com/projects/cnc-projects/89-milling-aluminum-on-the-homemade-cnc.html

(actually reading this post reminded me to post up the pics and video) thanks

CNC Questions and Answers / Re: Getting into CNC - wondering about Sketchup
« on: September 23, 2009, 04:05:32 AM »
Hey Preston!

Gabriel has a tutorial for getting Sketchup files to STL files which can then be opened in a CAM program for generating the toolpaths (I used Artcam and was successful)

Good luck with the machine and keep us posted! :)

Hey that's pretty cool - I haven't seen anyone trying to use air tools before either :) good try

I was throwing around the idea of using a die grinder as a spindle for this sewing machine motor I have - but haven't got around to playing with it yet... My router's slowest speed is like 8000 rpm and that's too fast for milling metal I think
