« on: September 26, 2009, 12:29:10 PM »
Hello people
I have this old computer

xp
professional
version 2002
service pack 2

processeur intel pentium 111
534 Mhz
192  Ram

I tried to install ubuntu and there was not enough space because i couldnt remove some of the window programs.
It would be good if I can use this computer for my cnc things
So what I can do is reformat the computer with linux
so i can use EMC2

I am not sure if this computer is good enough
Before I go ahead with this idea
I wanted get your thoughts on this
Thanks

Hello gocnc,

Everything you need to reformat your computer should be on the EMC2 live cd, which you can get from their website http://linuxcnc.org/.

They actually make it pretty easy to reformat your computer. All you have to do is boot the OS using the cd. Once the OS has loaded, there will be an icon on the Ubuntu desktop which will take you through the reformatting process when you click it.

It's been a long time since I've done it myself, but I remember it being pretty straight forward.

As for whether or not your computer is good enough, well I think it might be a little on the slow side. It might be OK if you are only interested in cutting out simple parts. The more complex ones though will require more processing power. 3D parts in particular put a lot pressure on the system.

That's my 2 cents anyway.
You might be able to search the net and see if anyone else has tried EMC2 on a computer similar to yours. If they were able to operate it successfully, you should be OK.

Take Care
Gabriel

I have decided to not use the very old computer that I have and instead use one the Ibms that has a window server I will
download the cd tommorow it seems like it will take a while to download.

I dont know why I have to have Ubuntu but I hear that name mentoined all the time so I guess I have no choice.

They have a wiki but I could not ask anything

My concern is that When I install Ubuntu it will screw up my whole system
Tommorow I will try to find someone to ask this question to them
Thanks

Hi Gabriel
I dont thingk I am going to use the old computer because when I use it for browsing the internet I moves very slow and I have tried to use Rhino and it takes forever to do something small
So Ill keep that for other things

What I have decided on is to use
Ubuntu 8.04&EMC2 Live CD
without reformating my computer
I have a windows server 2003

Will it confuse the  windows operating system
I went to their site and I could not find a place to ask this
Thanks
